Melia Duo | 2nd Prize | ENKOR Int'l Chamber Music Competition 2016/17

SECOND PRIZE

Melia Duo
UK
Hannah Fry, saxophone
Alex Smith, percussion
Score: 86.53

The Melia Duo is a dynamic saxophone and percussion ensemble based in Manchester. Both current students at the Royal Northern College of Music, the duo benefit from individual and ensemble tuition from the Equivox Duo; Simone Rebello and Rob Buckland. As well as this, the duo has received coaching from chamber music specialists including Bart Schneeman, Andy Scott, Melinda Maxwell, and Jeremy Young.

Since bonding over a shared love of performance innovation, Hannah and Alex have begun to explore and expand the repertoire of the saxophone/percussion duo. Whilst this expansion has primarily been in arranging much of their own repertoire, the duo have recently begun to commission works from colleagues at the RNCM. They look forward to premiering their first commission this Spring.

The duo divide their time between the performance of well-established and newly commissioned repertoire in traditional concert settings, and more immersive, theatrical performances. Each present their own challenges, but both provide opportunity to showcase this unusual and vibrant ensemble.
