Ellen Hayashi (15) is in 9th grade at the American International School of Utah. She began violin at six with Deborah Moench. Currently, Ellen is a Dorothy and Richard Starling Foundation Scholar studying with Eugene Watanabe and a full scholarship student in the Gifted Music School Conservatory, where she participates in Conservatory Orchestra and in the Bear Quartet. Ellen made her orchestral debut at 10 with the Utah Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then, she has won numerous competitions, performing with multiple orchestras in the state of Utah, including the Utah Symphony. Ellen has been a state winner in the Utah MTNA Performance Competition, alternate in the Southwest Regional MTNA Competition, two-time semi-finalist at the Blount-Slawson Young Artists Competition, and a quarter-finalist at the Fischoff National Chamber Competition with the Olympus Quartet. In 2017-2018, Ellen was a finalist at the Coeur D’Alene National Young Artists Competition and, with the Bear Quartet, winner of the Pasadena Conservatory of Music Chamber Music Competition and the WDAV Young Chamber Musicians’ Competition. Ellen has participated in masterclasses with artists including Stefan Jackiw, Arnold Steinhardt, Midori Goto, and Andres Cardenes. When not playing violin or doing schoolwork, she likes being with friends, watching Netflix, doing art, and snuggling with her dog Treble.
