Sarah Hetrick | 2nd Prize | Winds & Percussion | 5th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


Sarah Hetrick, a Pennsylvania native, is a saxophonist and educator based in Austin, TX. Aside from teaching in the Central Texas area, Sarah enjoys maintaining an active performing career as a solo and chamber musician in Texas and throughout the United States. Sarah performs regularly with the MODUS saxophone quartet, who is committed to providing free outreach programs, masterclasses, and recitals to schools and colleges in Texas and beyond. Sarah is a regular performer at the Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium and the NASA Region IV Conference.

As a dedicated advocate and performer of new music, Sarah has commissioned works by James Parker, Andrew Koss, Shelley Washington, Alexis Bacon, Andrew Boss and more. Sarah has played in the Fusebox Festival, the multidisciplinary festival Ears, Eyes, and Feet, Density512’s concert series, Pale Blue, the CLUTCH series for new music, and will be featured in Novus New Music’s Campaign for Women in Music.

As director of the Female Saxophonist Competition, the first national competition for young female identifying saxophonists, Sarah oversees the commission, operations, and development of the inaugural competition that is to take place in Spring 2019. A vision that is shared by the competition’s many supporters, Sarah developed the competition in the pursuit of creating a community and a platform that encourages and supports the professional and artistic development of young female identifying saxophonists.

Sarah is currently the Saxophone Teaching Assistant at The University of Texas at Austin, where she teaches non-major applied saxophone, chamber music, saxophone pedagogy, and is the director of the University of Texas Non-Major Saxophone Ensemble. In addition, Sarah also teaches applied lessons, is an instructor for Saxophone Academy Austin and the Longhorn Music Camp, and is active as a clinician and masterclass teacher for middle schools, high schools and colleges across Texas.

Sarah is a prize winner of the Texas MTNA Young Artist Competition, Pennsylvania MTNA Young Artist Competition, the Butler Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, the 2015 Delta Omicron Solo Competition, and the 2014 Pennsylvania MTNA Chamber Music Competition.

Prior to pursuing doctoral studies, Sarah earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Music Degree in Saxophone Performance from The University of Texas at Austin, and completed additional study at Université Européene de Saxophone in Gap, France. Sarah's primary teachers are Dr. Keith Young and Dr. Stephen C. Page.

Sarah’s professional affiliations include International Alliance for Women in Music, the North American Saxophone Alliance, Texas Music Educators Association, and Sigma Alpha Iota.
