Shaniqa Ratnasingam | 3rd Prize | Winds & Percussion | 5th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


Shaniqa Ratnasingam is a first year university student, studying classical saxophone in the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), under the tutelage of Dr. Matthew Styles, Head of Saxophone Studies at WAAPA. She is also a member of the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO) and have been for the past 3 years. She plays the alto, tenor and soprano saxophones, clarinet, piano and sings. She has been playing the soprano saxophone for 11 years; the alto saxophone for 8 years; the tenor saxophone for 2 years; the piano for 11 years and has been singing for 14 years. She has participated in various Eisteddfods and performing arts competitions in the last few years and received first place for a saxophone Eisteddfod two years ago. She has completed exams under the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) up to Grade 8 for saxophone and has received an 'A+' in Grades 4, 5 and 6 and received an 'A' in Grade 8. In 2016, she participated in the Great Composers Competition and received Second Place in her category. In 2015, she had the opportunity of having one-on-one lessons with Andy Scott, Tutor in Saxophone at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and Rob Buckland, Senior Tutor in Saxophone and Deputy Head of School of Wind, Brass & Percussion at the Royal Northern College of Music. She has received lessons and has performed in masterclasses with artists including Andy Scott, Rob Buckland, Mark Walton, Erin Royer, Matthew Styles and Jennifer Watson. She aspires to be an internationally recognised classical saxophonist, playing in world renowned orchestras and continuing to expose more of the world to classical saxophone.
