Matthew Mak | 3rd Prize | Strings | 7th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


 Matthew Mak, 13, is from Southern California. He began playing the cello at the age of 7 and is currently studying with Yoshika Masuda. He was a member of the Los Angeles Children’s Orchestra from 2015-2020 and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Times Square’s Red Steps, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Laemmle Theater, and Disney Concert Hall. Matthew is currently an ensemble member at the Colburn Ed and Mari Edelman Chamber Music Institute. He also participates in a cello quartet at Junior Chamber Music. In the past, Matthew was awarded first and second prizes in numerous competitions including ASTA-LA Regional Solo, CAPMT Concerto Competition, Salzburg Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition, American Protégé International Competition, “Làszlò Spezzaferri” International Music Competition, and Virtuoso Artists Festival. Outside of music, Matthew takes part in creative problem-solving tournaments. His team won 1st place at both the 2019 & 2021 Destination Imagination California State and Regional Finals, and received 4th overall highest score in the Improvisational Instant Challenge at the 2019 Global Finals out of 67+ elementary teams from around the world.
