Marco Santistevan is a violist from Rio Grande City, Texas, a small town found on the U.S.-Mexico border. He began his musical studies on the viola at age 9 in his elementary school’s string program and immediately fell in love with the art. As a violist, he has been a member of the TMEA All-State Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra 2, and most recently, the National Repertory Orchestra. In addition, Marco has participated in masterclasses with internationally renowned artists, such as Hong-Mei Xiao and James Dunham. He was also a finalist in the 2023 Tuesday Musical Club’s Young Artists Competition.
Marco is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts, where he studies with Ronald Houston. While at SMU, he has performed chamber music with renowned musicians such as Aaron Boyd, Masumi Rostad and Edward Aaron as part of the Meadows School of the Arts Chamber Music Masterworks Series. Marco has also been active in the performance of new music. He has played works by student composers in SMU’s Emerging Sounds concert series and music by other living composers as a part of SYZYGY: SMU’s contemporary ensemble.
