Bryan Im is a sophomore at Bellarmine College Preparatory. Bryan has been playing the viola for 3 years and currently studies under Ms. Pei-Ling Lin, and previously played the violin for 6 years. Bryan is a violist for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. Prior to joining SFSYO, he was the principal violist for the Golden State Youth Orchestra and has performed in Czech Republic and Austria for the 2022 Tour. He has also won the Solo Competition with GSYO and performed during the 2022-2023 season. Bryan has placed first in the 2022 Silicon Valley Music Competition, Viola Middle School Division; and third in the 2022 KAMSA Competition, Junior Division. In 2023, Bryan received second prize in the 2023 KAMSA Competition, Senior Division; and won the 2023 Charleston Baroque Music Competition.
Bryan also actively engages with his school music program. As a freshman, he received the “Most Valuable Player” award in his school orchestra, as well as getting chosen to perform the Dvorak American Quartet at the Spring Solo Concert. Using his love for music, Bryan avidly volunteers at senior homes and performs at various charity concerts.
During the summer of 2022, Bryan participated in the Summer Music Institute at Tateuchi Hall and studied with the Associate Principal violist of the San Francisco Symphony, Yun Jie Liu. In the summer of 2023, Bryan studied solo viola with Michelle LaCourse and Rayna Yun Chou at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. He has been the principal violist for the Hopebox Orchestra for both summers (2022, 2023).
