Second Prize Winner
Nathan Kim (14) has been studying the piano since the age of six, and currently studies with Dr. Renato Fabbro. Numerous accolades have been bestowed upon Nathan for his striking abilities as a young pianist and musician, and he has won various international, national & regional competitions, including his first at age 8.
In April 2011, he performed at the Ten Grands for Kids and Ten Grands concerts at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon as a result of winning Grand Prize in the Rose City Music Festival Young Artist Competition. Nathan also performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.17 at the Newmark Theatre as the youngest VanBuren Young Artist Debut Concerto Competition winner with an orchestra of members from the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theatre and as a soloist with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra at the Soreng Theatre in Eugene later that summer. Nathan is a three-time winner in the Oregon MTNA Junior Piano Competition, and was runner-up at the 2012 MTNA Northwest Division Competition.
He earned 1st Prize in the Mondavi Center National Young Artist Competition and performed at the Robert Mondavi Performing Arts Center in Davis, CA. Nathan also earned 1st Prize in the Central Oregon Symphony Young Artists Competition, the US New Star Piano Competition, and the Oregon Symphony Wiscarson Concerto Competition, and he was the Grand Prize winner of the Cascades Classical Music Foundation Competition. He won 2nd Prize in the 2013 Vancouver Symphony Young Artists Competition and was also a finalist in 2014 when the major Portland snowstorm caused a rescheduling that conflicted with a previous performance engagement in New York City.
In February 2014, Nathan achieved a personal musical goal by performing at Carnegie Hall as a result of winning Grand Prize in the American Fine Arts Festival International Concerto Competition performing Prokofieff Piano Concerto No.3 and Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.15, and was given a scholarship to participate in their summer music course in Russia. He also was selected 1st Prize in the 2014 American Protégé International Concerto Competition and 2nd Prize in the International Piano and Strings Competition, and repeated performing at Carnegie Hall for two winner’s recitals in May.
Nathan has performed in Portland Piano International master classes with Arnaldo Cohen, Catherine Kautsky and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet to name a few along with Lara Downes. He has been featured several times on the Portland Piano Company/Sherman Clay Whiz Kids Concert series. Nathan also won 1st prize in the Cris Tapang, Suzanne D. Raines & Tom O’Brien Memorial scholarships. He was featured on All Classical 89.9FM in Portland, Oregon with the program “On Deck”.
