Matthew Chang, age 12, will be attending Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles in the fall. He started playing violin at age 6 with Mr. Elmer Su and made his orchestral solo debut at age 9. He has won many awards for his solo and ensemble violin performances, including the American String Teachers Association Greater Los Angeles Competition, the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale Bach Competition, solo and ensemble competitions at the Southwestern Youth Music Festival, the California Association of Professional Music Teachers Competitions, the Palisades Concerto Competition, the Lansum International Music Festival, the Southern California Junior Bach Festival, and the Music Teachers' Association of California VOCE Branch Competition. Matthew has performed at the Redlands Bowl as a 65th Annual Redlands Bowl Young Artist Competition winner, as well as at Carnegie Hall in December 2016 as a first-place winner of the American Protege International Concerto Competition. He is also a scholarship recipient of the Westside Committee of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Music Teachers’ Association of California. Matthew has appeared as a soloist with the Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra, the Palisades Symphony, and the Loma Linda University Church Orchestra. Matthew also has won piano competitions including the Alice Frazier Kitchen Memorial Scholarship, Southern California Junior Bach Festival, and SYMF. Besides his musical activities, Matthew is on the swim and track teams, robotics team, debate team, and student council.
