Matthew Lau | 2nd Prize | Violin 2017 | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


Matthew Lau, 15, Sydney, Australia, started playing the violin at the age of 4 and is currently studying with Shuti Huang of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Matthew was awarded both his AMusA and LMusA Diplomas with distinctions. He is the co-Concertmaster of the NSW Youth Orchestra. This year, he was invited by Richard Tognetti to join the Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy. Over the years, Matthew has won many competitions in the Northern Beaches and Ryde Eisteddfods.

Matthew is studying at the prestigious Sydney Church of England Grammar School (SHORE) on a full music scholarship. Every year he has won the Shore Diamond Music Award- the highest accolade for solo playing. He is passionately involved in all aspects of his school’s music- Shore Symphony Orchestra, Senior Strings, String Quartet, HSC ensembles, School Musicals, Chapel Choir, Tenor/Bass Choir and Army Cadet Marching Band.

Matthew competes at a national level in GS skiing at the Australian Interschools Championships. He enjoys cricket, golf and swimming.
