Krystian Chiu | 1st Prize | Strings | 5th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Krystian Chiu began his cello studies at the age of four under Blake Brasch through the Music Institute of Chicago. He then joined The Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago, a nationally recognized training center for gifted precollege musicians, as a Colburn Foundation Scholar studying under Hans Jørgen-Jensen. He recently completed his undergraduate degree at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he studied with distinguished cellist Eric Kim. Krystian is currently a first year masters student at The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, studying under Desmond Hoebig.

Krystian has participated at renowned music festivals such as the New York String Orchestra Seminar, IU Summer String Academy, Sarasota, Bowdoin, and the Aspen Music Festival and School on fellowship. He has served principal positions in orchestras of the Shepherd School, IU Jacobs School of Music, the Aspen Music Festival, the Sarasota Music Festival, and The Academy of the Music Institute of Chicago. Krystian had the opportunity to premier a work by Aspen Music Festival President and CEO Alan Fletcher, serve as member of the Aspen Chamber Symphony, and study under, Richard Aaron and David Finckel. Krystian has also performed with the New World Symphony as a substitute cellist.

An avid chamber musician, Krystian was a member of the Atara String Quartet who received prizes from the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Saint Paul String Quartet Competition, MYA Discover National Chamber Music Competition, A.N. & Pearl G. Barnett Competition and the Jules M. Laser Chamber Music Competition. He has been invited on Chicago’s Introductions WFMT 98.7, NPR’s From The Top, New York City’s WQXR 105.9, and Aspen Public Radio. Krystian was chosen for the Aspen Music Festival’s highly selective Finckel-Wu Han Chamber Music Studio and Weilerstein Chamber Music Workshop. He has studied chamber music with Timothy Eddy, David Finckel and Wu Han, Donald and Vivian Weilerstein, Anton Nel, Cathy Cho, Nancy Allen, Alex Kerr, Masao Kawasaki, Paul Katz, Mark Kaplan, and the Pacifica, Cleveland, and Ying Quartets. He has also collaborated with James Dunham, the Pacifica Quartet and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Krystian recently gave his solo debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as one of four finalists of the Getting to Carnegie Competition. Other performance venues include Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, the New World Center, and Aspen’s Benedict Music Tent and Harris Concert Hall. Krystian has taken top prizes from competitions around the country including the Walgreens National Concerto Competition, the Society of American Musicians Competition, Chinese Fine Arts Competition, DePaul Concerto Competition, and Lima Young Artist Competition. He has also appeared in the finals of the Skokie Valley Young Artists Competition.
Krystian has performed in master classes for Clive Greensmith, Timothy Eddy, Brinton Smith, Michael Mermagen, Tamas Vargas, Amir Eldan, Morten Zeuthen, Brandon Vamos, Paul Colleti, Eileen Moon, Paul Colleti, the Montrose Trio, and the Ying, Escher, and Cavani Quartets.
