The PHILLIPS TRIO, is comprised of three juniors from Phillips Academy Andover. Ariel Wang, Evan Tsai, and Luke Henderson have been playing in ensembles, performing publicly, and competing together for three years. The trio is coached primarily by Holly Barnes, director of performance at Phillips Academy, and Christopher Walters. For the trio’s debut, the group performed Beethoven’s Op. 70 No.1 “Ghost” Trio in the Fall Chamber Music Showcase.
ARIEL ZIQIAN WANG, 16 years old, began her piano education when she was three. When she was thirteen years old, she was awarded the Teacher Association for Performance (ARCT) level diploma in the Royal Conservatory of Music. She greatly credits her teachers Ken Broadway and Ralph Markham, and she currently studies with Haesun Paik, and Sangyoung Kim, and periodically takes lessons with Wha-Kyung Byun in the New England Conservatory. In 2018, she participated in the Curtis Institute of Music program, where she studied with Curtis faculty Amy Yang and Natalie Zhu, and played for Julliard School’s Yoheved Kaplinsky, and this summer, she studied with William Wolfram at Eastern Music Festival.
EVAN TSAI, 17 years old, began his musical training on piano and cello when he was four years old with his mother, Taiwanese-American bassist Yung-Chiao Wei. He started playing the double bass when he was 13 years old. He currently studies with Lawrence Wolfe, Yung-Chiao Wei, and Jan Müller-Szeraws.
LUKE HENDERSON, 16 years old, began violin at the age of three and has been performing publicly regularly since the age of four. He currently studies with Paul Biss at the New England Conservatory. His former teachers include Dr. Ann Setzer at the Juilliard Pre-College division, Mr. Dovid Friedlander from the North Carolina Symphony, and Yoram Youngerman from the Israel Music Institute. For the past two years, Luke has participated in NEC’s Chamber Music Intensive Performance Seminar which works with chamber music coaches Merry Peckham, Donald Weilerstein, Miriam Fried, Paul Biss, Soovin Kim, Kim Kashkashian, and Paul Katz. In the summers, Luke has studied at Meadowmount School of Music and Aspen Music Festival and School.
