Shawn Hsu | 2nd Prize | Strings | 6th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition

 


Shawn Hsu, 17, is a senior at Mission San Jose High School. He started playing piano from the age of four and cello from the age of ten. He participated in the San Jose Youth Symphony for one year but decided to pursue a career of solo performance. He goes to various competitions, from local to state-wide to international.

From 2014 to present, Shawn has studied cello with his teacher Jonathan Koh in Cupertino, California. Since 2016, Shawn has participated in competitions, and has won 3rd place in US Open Music Competition (USOMC), 2nd place in US International Music Competition (USIMC), 3rd place in ENKOR International Music Competition, 2nd place in Diablo Valley Young Artist String Competition, 1st place in Korean American Music Supporters’ Association (KAMSA), and 1st place in Voice, Orchestral instruments, Chamber Ensemble (VOCE) State competition. Additionally, Shawn has played in chamber for 4 years: 2 with a quartet and 2 with a piano trio. With his trio, he won 3rd place in VOCE State Competition and 2nd place in ENKOR. Other than competitions, Shawn has been selected as first chair of both California Orchestra Directors’ Association (CODA) All-State Orchestra and Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC) Honors Orchestra. In June, 2019, he attended Boston University Tanglewood summer camp for chamber music. He was accepted to the Meadowmount School of Music for the summer of 2020, but was unable to attend due to the pandemic. While he isn’t preparing for competitions or auditions, Shawn enjoys making covers of theme songs. He has also played volleyball in his high school varsity team since freshman year. He has an interest in biomedical engineering, and attended the Biomedical Engineering Innovation camp at Johns Hopkins University summer of 2020."
