Vivian Zhu, age 15, is a 10th grader at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, CA. She started her cello lessons with Mr. Jia-mo Chen and then Mrs. Julie Hochman since she was 7 years old. She has participated in many music events, competitions and orchestras. She has taken several cello master classes from Amit Peled, Andy Luchansky, Rachel Young, Laura Sewel, Bion Tsang and Hannah Holman. She won the 3rd place in California Association of Music Professional Teacher Concerto competition North region, 2nd place (strings) in ENKOR International Music competition (2020), the 3rd place in the U.S. Open Music competition string category, First Place Winner of the American Protégé International Music Competition, 3rd place Cello in International Music Competition and Classical Masters Festival, and 1st place in California Association of Music Professional Teacher Go for Gold. She has been selected to play in the California All-State Orchestra 2019, 2020 (2nd chair) and 2021. She is the recipient of scholarships from National Symphony Orchestra SMI, Univ. of Pacific and Cazadero music programs. She was accepted to the National Symphony Orchestra SMI in 2021, International Cello Institute and Amit Peled’s Cello Academy in 2020. She has played with Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Premier Orchestra and Folsom Lake College Chamber Orchestra for five years. She attended Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Summer Chamber workshop for several years, and attended Music by the Sea Chamber Summer Workshop in Monterey. For two years, she has been playing in the Pacific Institute of Music piano chamber group. Besides cello, Vivian enjoys STEM research, programming and performing ballet and contemporary dance at Hawkins school of performing Arts.
