Emma Zou | 1st Prize | Strings | 9th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


 Emma Zou, 17, is a senior at Poolesville High School, Maryland and will be attending Brown University in fall 2024. Her musical journey began when she picked up piano 11 years ago, which she continues to play for fun and in competitive ensembles. Emma started learning viola 6 years ago, and quickly fell in love with its unique timbre and musical role. She is currently the co-principal violist of the Maryland Classical Youth Orchestras' Philharmonic Orchestra, and the violist of a quartet under the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) Youth Fellowship scholarship program. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, Bulgarian Embassy, Strathmore Music Center, and more. Emma is a Boston University Tanglewood Institute and NSO Summer Music Institute Orchestra alumna as well. She has won first place awards in several competitions, such as the YMIC Classical Music Competition and VIVO International Music Competition. Emma also composes competitively and for fun, with her most recent creation being a duet for viola and piano. Outside of music, she dabbles in hobbies like crochet, baking, and scrapbooking.
