My name is Wesley Lim; I am 17 years old, and I go to Houston High School. I started playing the flute in 5th grade. Although I initially disliked the instrument, I fell in love with it because of the tough competition around me. In middle school, I made the top group in the regional All-West Honor Blue Band every single year, even making first chair in 7th grade. When I entered high school, the horizons opened for me. In high school, All-West continued, and I have made it all 3 years so far achieving 1st, 2nd, and 1st chairs in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades, respectively. There is the additional All-State Convention in Nashville, where I’ve made 2nd, 4th, and 3rd chairs for my three years of high school. Also, I had the chance to travel to New York City to perform in Carnegie Hall with the Honors Performance Series 2022 Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, I also did Governor's School last year, which introduced me to life in music post-primary education. At Governor's School, I was a finalist in the Honors Recital, which takes 10 students out of about 150. Finally, most recently, I won 2nd place at the Lois Pickard Competition in the Woodwind/Brass division for 2024. Currently, I am in 2 city orchestras, and I am the principal flute in my school's wind ensemble. I have also achieved first place in the prestigious Beethoven Club of Memphis, where I will be performing at a recital in May. I also got a 36 on the ACT last month, as well as an acceptance letter from the National Flute Association. I will be doing this for the High School Flute Choir, and I will be traveling to San Antonio this summer. Overall, flute has grown to mean a lot to me, and I wish to continue my studies in the Enkor Competition.
