Trio Freesia is a chamber ensemble formed by three close friends. Founded in 2025, the trio is based at the Gifted Music School in Salt Lake City, Utah, and consists of Deann Huang (violin, 14), Kate Boynton (cello, 18), and Christina Sung (piano, 15). The ensemble is coached by Dr. Koji Attwood.
Violinist Deann Huang is a student in the full-scholarship Conservatory at Gifted Music School. She has appeared as a soloist with the Utah Symphony and the Timpanogos Symphony Orchestra, and has received awards at the MTNA Southwest Division, the Music Grand International Prix Competition, as well as other national and international competitions.
Cellist Kate Boynton, also a full-scholarship student in the Conservatory, is a finalist of the ASTA Competition and the Brimhall Cello Competition. She won First Prize at the Great Composers Competition in the category of Best Mendelssohn Performance in collaboration with the Gifted Music School Conservatory Orchestra, and has participated in masterclasses with distinguished guest artists including Dr. Michael Kaufman, Dr. Leo Singer, Dr. Matthew Zalkind, Dr. Amir Zaldan, and Dr. Ka-Wai Yu.
Pianist Christina Sung has earned top prizes at the Kaufman International Piano Competition, the Philadelphia International Piano Competition, and the MTNA National Finals, and received the Grand Prize at the 11th ENKOR International Piano Competition.
Trio Freesia performs frequently in concerts and masterclasses.
Drawing on diverse cultural backgrounds and musical paths, the members of Trio Freesia are united by shared musical values—integrating individual sensibilities and perspectives through thoughtful collaboration and a deep creative connection. Like the freesia flower, which blooms with the same fragrance across different lands, the trio brings together distinct voices to create unified performances that are expressive, dynamic, and deeply engaging.
