Joshua Shi is a rising junior attending Mission San Jose High School in Fremont, California. He began piano at the age of 6, and is currently studying with Dr. Jed Galant.
Over the years, Joshua has won many awards from different piano competitions, including first place in the Solo Showcase category, first place in Open Solo Waltz category, and the outstanding gold medalist award, all from the US Open Music Competition. He also won first place in both the Classical and Contemporary categories at the East Bay Music Festival competition. Joshua has additionally received second place at the Annual Sylvia M. Ghiglieri piano competition. At the MTAC concerto competition, he received the place of honorable mention.
Joshua was invited to perform at the Junior Bach Music Festival twice in a row, and participated in the “Bach in the Subways” movement. In March, 2020, he was honored to receive a masterclass from Dr. Sharon Mann at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In May, Joshua was awarded the Panel Honors merit from the Music Teachers’ Association of California.
In high school, Joshua is currently the selected piano accompanist for the school’s choir. On top of that, he founded a jazz band consisting of 16 musicians and went on to represent Mission High School at the Fremont Unified School District Talent show. He is also the president of the MSJHS Impromptu Music Club, a club that shares the love of music to the community by regularly performing for various nursing homes or the local library. Joshua is also a piano teacher for a special one on one program with the Friends of Children with Special Needs organization.
