Violinist Sarah Son, age 15, is a sophomore at Davis Senior High School and a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College program. Sarah currently studies violin under the tutelage of Mr. Elbert Tsai and previously studied with Mr. Davis Law at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College. She started violin lessons at age 5 with Ms. Heather Powell and continued with Dr. Christine Choi. Sarah is co-concertmaster of the Sacramento Youth Symphony Premier Orchestra conducted by Mr. Ryan Murray and this is her eighth consecutive season in the Sacramento Youth Symphony. As a winner of the Sacramento Youth Symphony Premier Orchestra Concerto Competition, Sarah played the Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No. 5 Op. 37 mvts 1 & 3 at the Premier Orchestra Winter Concert in January, 2022. 

In 2021, Sarah was the concertmaster of the Korean-American Music Supporters’ Association (KAMSA) Youth Symphony Orchestra, California Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) High School Honor Orchestra, and the Sacramento Youth Symphony Summer Chamber Music Workshop String Orchestra. She is currently a first violinist in the Davis Senior High Symphony Orchestra directed by Mr. Angelo Moreno and the SFCM Youth Baroque Ensemble co-directed by Dr. Corey Jamason. In past years, Sarah was concertmaster of the Holmes Junior High Advanced Orchestra (2020-2021), Holmes Junior High Intermediate Orchestra (2018-2019), Davis All-City Orchestra (2017-2018), University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music Junior High String Orchestra (2019), Sacramento Youth Symphony Summer Chamber Music String Orchestra (2018), and Sacramento Youth Symphony Classic Orchestra(2015-2016). Sarah participated in the CASMEC Junior High All-State Orchestra (2019, 2020) and the All-State High School Symphony Orchestra (2022) as a first violinist. 

Sarah was selected as an outstanding performer at the Junior Bach Festival (2021, 2022) and a finalist for the Sejong Music Competition Senior Division (2020). She also won first place from the Auburn Symphony Young Artist Competition (2022), CalASTA Sacramento Solo Competition in the Junior Division (2020), MTAC VOCE Branch Competition (2020, 2017), Crescendo International Music Competition (2018), and CAPMT Go for the Gold Music Competition (2018). She won awards and scholarships from the Classical Masters Music Competition (2015, 2016, 2019), CAPMT Go for the Gold Music Competition (2015, 2016), Auburn Symphony Young Artist Competition (2019, 2021), and the Burlingame Music Club Competition (2022). Sarah was a recipient of the Community Engagement Certificate (2021) and High School Performance Certificate (2022) from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Pre-College. 

Sarah attended both the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Violin Workshop(2021) and the Orford Musique Academy(2021) where she had masterclasses from Ms. Lucie Robert. In the summer of 2022, she will be attending Music@Menlo Chamber Music Festival and Institute Young Performers Program. As an avid chamber musician, Sarah has been participating in the annual Great Composers Rising Stars Program directed by Ms. Susan Lamb Cook since 2016. As part of the program, she performs in churches and senior centers in the Sacramento and Davis area. Sarah regularly plays solo violin and chamber music for local seniors and patients through Lifting Spirits with Music, an organization where young musicians perform for senior homes and hospitals. Sarah is also an active member of the Back to Bach Project, a program that educates young children about classical music through classroom presentations, performances, and educational videos. Besides violin, Sarah started piano lessons at age 4 in Vermillion, South Dakota and studied piano for nine years with Ms. Christy Kimball, Ms. I-Hui Chen, and Ms. Akiko Gaffney respectively.
