Cara Wang, age 14, studies cello at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) Pre-College division under Amos Yang. She began cello lessons at age 4 with Alan Yang. She has won various competitions, including the Khuner Young Artist Competition, the Livermore Amador Symphony Competition for Young Musicians, First Place at Korean-American Music Supporters’ Association (KAMSA) Competition, Second Place at the Pacific Musical Society and Foundation Competition, Grand Prize at the Prodigy International Music Competition, First Place at CalASTA Strings State Competition, Outstanding Gold Medalist at U.S. Open Music Competition (2022, 2023), Second Place at Houston International Music Competition, and First Place at American Protégé International Concerto Competition.
Cara made her solo concerto debut February of 2023 performing Lalo Cello Concerto with the Central Oregon Symphony. She has also performed the concerto with the Castro Valley Orchestra and Symphony Parnassus (as winner of the 2023 SFCM Pre-College Concerto Competition). She has also performed the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Livermore-Amador Symphony and Prometheus Symphony Orchestra Previously, she has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Junior Bach Festival, and various community events.
Cara loves collaborating with others and was previously principal cellist of the SFCM Pre-College String Orchestra (2022-23) and a member of several chamber music groups. Currently, she is a member of the Young Chamber Musicians program and the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. This summer (2024), Cara had lessons and masterclasses with the faculty at the Encore Summer Chamber Music Institute. In the summer of 2023, Cara studied with Hans Jorgen-Jensen at the Meadowmount School of Music. Cara is inspired by the opportunity to learn from the wonderful musicians she has met and in gratitude, has started providing lessons to other young cellists in her community. When not working on music, Cara enjoys analytical writing and learning about psychology.
