Jean Yu started her cello studies at the age of 7 with previous piano experience of 3 years. She is a sophomore at Bellevue High School and currently studies cello with Leslie Marckx. In the summer of 2019, Jean attended Meadowmount School of Music and studied under Julia Lichten. She also attended the 2020 National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, with tutelage from Rachel Young.
She has received 1st place in several categories in the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside. Jean received Honorable Mention in the Washington MTNA competition in 2019 and 2020, and she was also selected as a cellist in the 2020 Washington All-State Symphony Orchestra. She was selected as a finalist for Coeur d’ Alene Symphony 2020 National Young Artists’ Competition. She has also won 2nd place in Bach Festival and 1st place in the 2020 Virtuoso Artists Festival.
She is in her 5th year with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras, currently participating in the Youth Symphony orchestra. She also studies chamber music with the Seattle Conservatory of Music and volunteers with Seattle Music Partners to teach cello to elementary school students in Seattle.
She has performed for Amir Eldan, Nathan Chan, Richard Aaron, Alison Wells, and Anthony Ross.
