Javier Garza | 2nd Prize | Winds & Percussion | 10th Edition | ENKOR Int'l Music Competition


Javi Garza began his musical career in his hometown Edinburg, TX. In 2007, Javi first began private piano lessons studying under Mrs. Karen Hersterly until the age of 19. After beginning percussion in the 6th grade, Javi began taking instruction from multiple percussion pedagogues and credits most of his success to their teaching. 

Throughout his musical career, Javi has been apart of many world renowned musical ensembles and has learned from some of the world’s best in the musical field. 

Javi first began his DCI career in 2019 when he received a contract to perform with Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps. During that season, Javi’s main interest in front ensemble approach and keyboard pedagogy began to take place. In 2021, Javi was the center marimba for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps where he earned 5th place in DCI’s Individual and Ensemble keyboard competition. Javi aged out with Blue Knights DBC in 2022. His WGI experience includes aging out as one of the center marimba performers at Broken City indoor percussion in Lake Elsinore, California in which they received 4th place in the national indoor competition, WGI. 

Since 2019, Javi has been studying Percussion Performance and Music Education at Texas Tech University. Javi has performed in many ensembles associated at Texas Tech including TTU Percussion Ensemble I, TTU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, TTU Symphony Orchestra, and the nationally renowned steel band ensemble “Apocalypse Now”. Javi has also had the honor of performing with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. 

Since 2019, Javi has taught front ensemble and percussion lessons in school in Texas and California such McAllen Memorial HS, Economedes HS, Lubbock Cooper HS, Frenship HS, West Plains HS, Lockney HS, Ropesville ISD, John W. North HS and many others. Javi is also currently one of the front ensemble instructors for the Blue Knights DBC. Javi credits most of his success to his past teachers. Javi has had the honor of studying under Brian Sexton, Eduardo  Trevino, Randy Sifuentes, Alan Shinn, Dr. Lisa Rogers, Dr. Michael Mixtacki, Tyler Gerson, John & Meagan Nelson, John Gaal, Julian Davidson, Phil Idell, as well as Kevin Shah and Mike Jackson.
